Wisdom Is Best (But An Angel Is Cool, Too)

"Wisdom: Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you."  ...Proverbs 4:6

Long ago in 1982, our back porch ceiling light burned out.

Days later (these things take time), I grabbed a chair to stand on so to change it (we had a ladder, but it was wooden, heavy and outside). Oh, and that room's floor, always, was damp. Always.

Stretching up on my toes, my fingers barely reached the bulb to unscrew it, but I did. I held the blackened bulb in my left hand and with my right, reached again, then replaced the bulb.

But uh-oh. My foot stepped to the chair's edge which made it (and me) both begin to tip backward.

And that's when I felt fingers press against my lower back. That firm touch helped me regain my balance, then I finished stepping off the chair. Just fine, not even slipping on the wet floor.

Once down, I thought, "Wait a minute. Is Tom home early from work?" I swung around and no one stood there. No one. Not even a two-year old Naomi was nearby.

For some seconds I paused there in wonder. "Who steadied me?" I asked. "Or did I imagine it?" But then I thought, "No. That touch was too real. It must have been an angel!"

I silently glanced around the small room (maybe hoping for a glimpse of him?), but nah. Spied nothing. I did, though, finish my housework that day with hours-long smiles.

And you know? Ever since then, I've tried to use more common sense when climbing on chairs, ladders, anything. The Bible says--

Wisdom is a shelter
    as money is a shelter,
but the advantage of knowledge is this:
Wisdom preserves those who have it."
... Ecclesiastes 7:12

--and I've found that exceedingly true.

Also? I'd rather not wear-out and frazzle my guardian angel. May my senseless choices be few so--when I arise from this chair--he doesn't roll his eyes, sigh and ask, "From which of her foolish choices will I have to rescue her, today?"  ッ

"For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways."   ... Psalm 91:11

My two favorite American Idol contestants sang a duet and oh wow! Tom and I listened to it a few times. What a happy delight.

Good Morning Debra! I am so glad your guardian angel was there to help you. And yes, I definitely believe in guardian angels, warrior angels, ministering angels, etc. I have had a few experiences myself along with my husband and best friend so I know I'm not crazy. I am SO thankful that God cares so much about us that he has sent angels to us.
As always, thanks for this post today.
Blessings,
Betsy

Thanks so much, Betsy! Isn't it wonderful that God goes out of His way to keep us safe, even when, instead, He could've said, "Man, you shoulda thought that through, kiddo!")?

Thanks, as always, for commenting! Blessings, Debra
