I've not gone all vintage-dreamy in awhile so here's an excerpt from a Facebook group I belong to, one discussing all things, past and present, related to the town where Tom, Naomi and I first lived in NY.
Gee, I love our area. There's a reason that Buffalo (and its burbs) is called The City of Good Neighbors!
Read this and you'll see a few reasons I, even after 26 years, feel blessed to live here. Please notice the kind way people speak to one another, ok?

---My Great Grandparents lived 3 doors from the church and they had a barn behind the house where they kept horses.
My Mom used to tell me that the city was always after them to get rid of the horses and someone would tip them off that they were coming to remove the horses. My great grandfather would move them before they got there. LOL.
The barn was still standing a few years ago and I noticed a few months ago it is now gone. My Grandparents lived kitty corner from the church. Love the photo.
---I lived the 3rd house on left of the picture 1952- 57 I think. I remember Popcorn Joes wagon in the barn you are talking about, I used to play over there.
--- I don't remember my Mom talking about the Popcorn wagon, but she had stories about going to Bye's in Olcott for popcorn when she was a girl and staying at her cousins' farm in the summers. Her grandparents lived right across the street and they had the barn in the backyard.
---And my Mom talked about the DiVirgilio's too. And all the families on _____ Street. Rocco Buccarelli? Not sure of the spelling? And the Moses sisters. Your Mom could fill in all the blanks :) Miss my Mom and all the stories.
---I'm sorry for your loss. She was there before we moved here.

-----So many great times in Youth Group and Choir. My own kids don't understand when I tell them there were some years (confirmation) when we were at church 4 or 5 days a week.

Debra here again: This was just a portion of conversation that I found yesterday.
Never let anyone convince you that good manners are gone, ok? They aren't.
Sometimes we might just need to spread a double portion of kindness to make up for a lack in Today's world. But with God's help? We can do that, even this:

And isn't this cute? That same former town of ours (just minutes from us now) has an every Monday summer night car cruise. Don't you love the blues/purples in this photo? And the womens' hair and clothes? And the way they're obviously having fun?

Such a fun glimpse into the past. The small town I grew up in has a facebook page and many, many of the same people still live there, 40 some years after I married and moved aways. I love that page. It's fun to see my parents, brothers, sister and myself remembered as children. Actually, Dennis and I hope to find a house and retire there! Although, there are rarely houses up for sale. As soon as one is listed, word of mouth has it sold before it ever really hits the real estate market.
Did you see my last blog post? The flashlights you helped provided arrived and there is a photo of them in a Christmas mini-stocking. Thank you again for your generous gift. I'm breathing easier, knowing I have them ready to be deivered to the Veterans Home right after Thanksgiving.

It's downright refreshing to be reminded that many folks are still civilized with one another. When I read, "I remember tap dancing in your kitchen," I just smiled and was transported to a different time. When I read Colossians 4:6, the words "always" and "everyone" stood out to me. I need to write that verse on sticky notes and post it everywhere!
Debra, I had a marvelous time shopping with the gift you gave me. Our daughter is expecting a baby (our first grandchild and we're crazy with excitement), so I purchased books for the baby and one parenting book for my daughter and son-in-law. I know that you value good books, so this was a special way for me to use your generous gift. I went to Hobby Lobby and purchased one of their pretty storage boxes to put them in and will give them to her at her baby shower. Thank you, again. I know my daughter and her little family will appreciate this gift very much!
Such a good reminder about our speech and in fact, I'm just getting ready to copy notes (and articles) off to put into my 3 ring binder that are Christian articles written on the tongue, our speech and gossiping.
The more I go over it and study it, as with anything - the more it gets down into us and will come back at just the right time to remind us (especially if we're getting ready to talk about things we shouldn't, etc.)
Hi Betsy! I did zip over to your blog and saw the post and again I'm so happy the gift came at just the right time! Yay! And I know what you mean about those Facebook pages which bring back memories. I also belong to one for the town where I finished high school, met Tom, had Naomi, etc.. Isn't it terrific keeping up with the news from places we loved? Our old town is 3,000 miles away but that Facebook page brings it so much closer.
Pam--so true! Loved how you thought it was refreshing to read these. So did I! And oh! Congratulations on soon becoming a grandmother and please know I'm thrilled you were able to use the gift for grandbaby gifts!
