"For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord." ... Luke 2:11
*****
Well, here it is December already and I've not said even two words about Christmas. So here you go:
Bah humbug.
Okay, okay. Breathe. If you've hung around here a few years you may recall that it's the other 11 months that I love (so how bad can I really be?). But December? Eh. Not so much.
I don't like the tv ads, for one thing. As in, the one which told Tom and me last week, "Give a Game Boy to your favorite people so they'll experience holiday joy."
Seriously? Come on.
And it's the annoying way my favorite shows get preempted, how the word 'holiday' is overused and the way people stare at you when you (nervously) murmur, "I don't bring up our Christmas decorations from the basement anymore.". And it's because friends become too busy with shopping, parties and decorating to write in their blogs or visit or communicate kindly as they do January through November. Though I'm not your typical hater of change, I, uh, well, er, hate those kinds of changes.
So there. :)
But oh, how I love January through November, especially here in this gorgeous, old-fashioned part of New York state! And how I love that Jesus was born so long ago and yet still spends His time in my heart, talking with me and yeah, changing how I view Life and nudging me to give to people all those other days.
But hey. Lest you think I've seriously gone all Worldly Christmas Hater, I did the oddest thing last week. I ordered this online from WalMart:
And when this lighted 3' tree arrives, I'll place it in front of our dining room windows so that it will bring a smile, perhaps an encouraging gleam to passersby who might drive around one night searching for Light, for Hope. Maybe when they spy our lone, tiny Christmas tree, a simple light surrounded by darkness, perhaps they'll recall the simplicity, the truth that--really--it's about a Baby who changed everything, all 365 days of every, single year. Forever.

Christmas makes me happy no matter what time of year it comes around.

And yes, I am remembering Pearl Harbor Day today. May we all remember. And pray.
I, too, dislike December commercialism. The incredible event where God chose to send his son in the most humiliating circumstances to live among men and then to give his life that we might live is the STORY. The GIFT far exceeds any of the baubles gifted to us during this special season.
ReplyDeleteI remember when the commercialism started to get to me. Had to fight that feeling off! Our tree is going up later than usual because we're waiting for our college-aged daughter to come over this Friday to help us because it's tradition. She did, however, have time this weekend to help put her boyfriend's tree up. Haha....the times they are a changin'. That 3' tree will be fun. We have a little tree in our kitchen window that has tiny kitchen utensils hanging from it....ladle, rolling pin, whisk. It's good for a smile. Merry Christmas, Debra. :)
ReplyDeleteMaBeane--sounds like we're on the same page again! :)
ReplyDeleteBonnie--Aww... the commercialism is only part of it. My list of dislikes could go on and on, but to sum it up? It's the rampant, total ignoring of Jesus in a hundred different ways that irks me most. Sigh.
Your little kitchen tree sounds delightful! :)
Thanks, Ladies.... Blessings, Debra
